Discrimination is usually between races. Not only skin color but it can also happen between cultures and religion. Discrimination is when one race or type of person thinks they are better and higher than another. Race discrimination is the most popular, not so much today but in the 1800's. The Civil Rights Act provided equal rights to all slaves. The Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery. Then Fourteenth provided citizenship, and lastly the Fifteenth guaranteed the right to vote. The Fourteenth Amendment protected the civil rights of individuals. Jim Crow laws played a big role in Discrimination. It separated blacks and whites and also legalized discrimination. segregation began to take place in public schools, public places, and public transportation. This led to more discrimination.
In the book I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings discriminating took part through out the whole book. Maya was a young black women who grew up during a rough time for blacks.
